It's to make sure the player uncovers unmatched cards that the next player might use.

Otherwise, I've found that with an even number of players (especially where there are only two), one player tends to get most of the matches while the other player spends time uncovering new cards. With an odd number of players, it doesn't matter as much. Then age and working memory becomes the best indicator of success, which is why I often let younger players turn up three cards instead of just two (playing in a mixed-age group).

But be sure to have the "free turn" option expire when there are 10 cards left on the table, so one player doesn't get lucky and clear the board.Denise in ILhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11928843626113889088noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-235276292454918436.post-35301223027469168872022-01-05T22:53:29.374-05:002022-01-05T22:53:29.374-05:00Another great carnival! I do (-!...I was interested in Dan's points too.
I do (-!-) think there's a real world, irrespective of whether students are interested in it or not. It's a wonderful, complex, important real world that we've got a lot of experience of and also a lot more to discover in.
But I'm with Dan in that:
- what feels real to students may not coincide with this;
- problem solving with abstract ideas - numbers, shapes, pattern - can follow very similar steps to real world modeling;
- it's the steps that are the thing more than the context.

I love Paula and your emphasis on problem posing, which of course is so closely linked to play.Simon Gregghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07751362728185120933noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-235276292454918436.post-89115810476135270632018-08-30T07:50:56.294-04:002018-08-30T07:50:56.294-04:00Great experience! Naturally, I was drawn in by the ...Great post John. Naturally, I was drawn in by the MTG card on the front; I used to love the game but kind of lost touch with it. For me, this quote from Mark really sparked my interest and got me thinking about motivation: "Our personal story carried enough value that it influenced how we behaved. It was an interesting concept, that people will give weight to choices based upon the ability to later tell a story about it." The connections to teaching mathematics are great. I ended up circling back to that quote and thinking about how students can only alter their behavior to create a personal story if they have options and influence over their learning experience. If everyone is doing the same thing, in the same way, there is no opportunity to make it their own. Boring. With options, I can be "the guy who used Desmos," or "the girl who solved the hardest problem." Now all we have to do is help students realize that they want to make mathematics a part of their story. I did not suffer from FOMO, though it is weird to read all the reflections and think, "wait a minute, I wasn't there?"
And alas, you hit on one of the reasons I stayed home. "How can we be more inclusive if we all go?" It is a confusing question, especially when TMC gives me so much validation. I am going to try to be my highest, mature self and say I am enough.
